London born, New York raised guitarist, Liberty Ellman is perhaps best known for his work with Henry Threadgill’s groundbreaking ensemble Zooid who picked up a 2016 Pulitzer Prize for the recording ‘In For a Penny, In For a Pound’.
As a composer and bandleader Ellman is held in the highest regard. His four critically acclaimed records have been nothing short of groundbreaking and his compositional style has been described as “highly controlled and recklessly inventive,” and “original and subtle”. Along with his contemporaries, Mr. Ellman is helping define the sound of jazz in the 21st century and 2016 he was even was voted #1 Rising Star Guitarist in the Downbeat Magazine Critics Poll.
The Liberty Ellman Trio features longtime band mates: bassist Stephan Crump and drummer Damion Reid. Their dynamic, rhythmic interplay allows the group to navigate any number of moods, playing both modern original music and interpretations of pieces by influential jazz composers such as Andrew Hill, Charles Mingus, Thelonius Monk and more.
This is the first visit to these shores for Liberty Ellman and co, and we are delighted to welcome a band of such prestige and pedigree. Do come along!
