At 7.45pm on Saturday 29th March, Bourne/Davis/Kane will take to the MAC stage for their Brilliant Corners performance.
Considered to be one of the most exciting and sought after jazz trios in the UK and Ireland, their appearance at the festival is worthy enough as it is. However over the past year Matthew Bourne (piano) Dave Kane (bass) and Steve Davis (drums) have been working with composer Piers Hellawell on a commission as part of PRS for Music Foundation’s New Music Biennial, which is to be premiered in Belfast that very night.
The work, named ‘Sound Carvings, Strange Tryst’ has seen composer and trio collide in a shared space to create a unique piece, leaving behind established writing methods and learning from one another, undermining assumptions about both improvising and the notation of music; composer working with improvisers.
The journey from commission award to performance night has been brilliantly recorded by Piers in a blog and gives a warts and all insight into the creative process behind the commission.
